Chip manufacturers are cautious about the trade war. If negotiations with China are successful, won't they fight again?
Although chip manufacturers have long complained about China's lenient policies and attitudes towards intellectual property protection, many remain wary of the unclear consequences of a comprehensive trade war between China and the United States. The new tariff plan will take effect after the 30 day public opinion period ends, and the long waiting time has sparked speculation that the new tariff policy will ultimately be diluted by lobbyists and elected representatives
The Economic Times reported from San Francisco that the Trump administration, under the banner of "countering China's unfair trade policies," announced a plan to impose tariffs of up to $60 billion on Chinese products, triggering a series of reactions in the semiconductor industry.
Last Thursday (March 22), Trump detailed the tax action and the results of a seven month investigation into China's technology policies and practices. This action will include restricting China's investment in American technology companies and challenging China's technology licensing practices in the World Trade Organization (WTO). China almost immediately launched a counterattack, proposing tariffs on American products such as pork, wine, fruits, and steel.
